The MOBILAIR App Is Here: Introducing Our Beta Application for Greener Mobility in Thessaloniki
We are excited to announce that the beta version of the MOBILAIR application is now live, a major milestone for the project and a significant step towards a greener, smarter Thessaloniki.
After months of research, co-creation sessions with students and citizens, and iterative development, the MOBILAIR app is ready for testing. Here is what it can do.
Real-Time Air Quality Maps Stay informed about the air quality in your neighbourhood and along your planned route. MOBILAIR uses an AI-powered forecasting model to provide street-level hourly predictions of PM₁₀, PM₂.₅ and NO₂ concentrations, giving you the information you need to make healthier choices every day.
Eco-Routing: Six Ways to Get There The app offers multimodal routing across six mobility modes, walking, cycling, public transport, shared mobility, car, and combined options. Crucially, routes are ranked not just by time and cost, but also by pollution exposure and carbon footprint, so you can always find the option that works best for you and the environment.
AI-Powered Nudging MOBILAIR’s nudging module learns your mobility habits and profile to offer personalised, timely suggestions that gently guide you towards more sustainable choices, without ever removing your freedom to decide. Nudges can take different forms: a pre-selected green route, a social proof message (“74% of users chose this option at this time”), or a personalised environmental message (“Choose this route and save 200g CO₂”).
The “What If” Feature Curious about what would change if you swapped your car for the bus just twice a week? The “What if” feature lets you explore alternative scenarios and see the real impact, in time, cost, and emissions, of different mobility choices.
Gamification: Green Choices, Real Rewards Every sustainable trip earns you points. Build streaks, unlock badges, track your weekly CO₂ savings, and redeem your points for mobility rewards, including free public transport rides and micromobility discounts, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Public Transport Authority (TheTA) and local micromobility operators.
Dashboards for the Municipality Behind the scenes, MOBILAIR provides the Municipality of Thessaloniki with fine-grained, real-time data on air quality hotspots, mobility patterns, and citizen adoption trends – supporting evidence-based decision-making for a more sustainable city.
The beta app is the result of a genuine co-design process, shaped by input from postgraduate students, citizens, and stakeholders across multiple co-creation workshops. It is available for testing now and your feedback will directly shape the final version.
